Weekly Wows #5

This week, I had some very moving wow moments. They all came from kindness and connection to others.

I found a priceless piece of our family “history.” Each Thanksgiving, David deep-fried a turkey. He put a lot of love into the process. He’d pick the right bird and inject it with Cajun seasonings the night before. The boys would help him dip the turkey into the oil, using a hockey stick to lower it. Everyone looked forward to his turkey; it was delicious. The kids and I decided to keep this tradition going, but there was a slight problem. No one knew exactly how he did it, so we decided we would figure it out. Earlier this week, I was in the garage, organizing our tools, when I noticed a small duffel bag I didn’t recognize. I looked inside and found all of David’s turkey frying spices, the injector tool he used, and his handwritten instructions on how to do it. I feel he’s with us, which provided a big wow.

I felt the love of my classmates. I signed up to take a seven-week online improv class with Second City, and it wrapped up on Tuesday. The experience was fun, and I’m glad I did it. During the last class of the session, the instructor has the participants share what they like most about each other. I found it interesting how the feedback overlapped. For example, when I thought about one of the women in my class, I instantly thought of how she was always committed to a scene. Many of the other participants used those exact words. It was very humbling to hear what my classmates thought of me. Many said they could tell that I am a writer due to my communication skills and word choices. It was a big wow moment, and I almost cried.

I enjoyed some amazing baking. My sister bought some fantastic banana bread from a farmer’s market. It was so moist and delicious. I sat and enjoyed a piece with a cup of coffee, focusing on the flavors. I’m always so thankful when talented bakers share their goods with others.

What were your wow moments this week?
